At Bolder Therapy, we firmly believe that embracing diversity, both in therapists as well in clients, enhances the therapeutic experience and leads to more meaningful outcomes.
As an Asian-American therapist, Dr. Will Hwang takes immense pride in his heritage and the unique perspective it brings to his therapeutic practice. By embracing his lived experience, Dr. Hwang strives to bolster the courage of his clients of all races to stand up for their own marginalized identities and embrace their authentic selves.
At our practice, you will work with a trained therapist who will provide culturally sensitive and inclusive care, ensuring that you feel respected, understood, and valued. Your therapist is attuned to the impact of intersectionality, acknowledging the various layers of identity that shape each person's journey.
We recognize the unique challenges and experiences faced by marginalized communities, and our therapists strive to offer trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, and LGBTQ+-affirming care.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that focuses on fostering psychological flexibility and helping individuals live more meaningful and value-driven lives. ACT is rooted in the belief that suffering is a natural part of the human experience, and rather than trying to eliminate or control negative thoughts and emotions, individuals can learn to accept them and make choices that align with their values.
In an ACT orientation, the therapist helps clients learn to observe and accept their thoughts and feelings without judgment, identify and clarify their personal values, and take action toward values-aligned goals.
In contrast to ACT, Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapeutic orientation that focuses on the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It is based on the premise that our thoughts influence our emotions and actions, and by identifying and reframing our negative or unhelpful thoughts, we can improve our emotional well-being and change our behaviors.
In a CBT orientation, the therapist works collaboratively with the client to identify and challenge maladaptive or distorted thinking patterns, such as negative self-talk, self-criticism, or irrational beliefs. By examining the evidence and considering alternative perspectives, clients learn to reframe their thoughts in a more realistic and positive way.
Bolder Therapy takes an therapeutic approach bolder than simply ACT or CBT...
Both ACT and CBT have a strong empirical basis and are supported by research as effective treatments for various mental health conditions. They are evidence-based therapies that have been studied extensively and shown positive outcomes.
While ACT and CBT have similarities, it's important to note their differences as well. ACT places greater emphasis on acceptance, mindfulness, and the exploration of personal values, whereas CBT focuses more on cognitive restructuring and specific behavior change techniques. Each therapy has its unique strengths and can be tailored to different individuals and specific treatment goals.
